Barriquito or zaperoco another way to enjoy coffee

Abroad, it is perhaps better known as barriquito rather than zaperoco, the two names often being considered interchangeable. The same drink or different drinks?... hard to say, some say that essentially the difference is linked to the specific island where one finds oneself spoiling this pleasant beverage, while others claim there is a substantial difference in the proportions of the different ingredients.
But beyond the disquisitions on the name and recipe, what exactly is it?
The barriquito or zaperoco is a sweet coffee-based drink. What characterises it is the particular layering of ingredients (it is strictly served in transparent glass glasses or cups), which give it an inviting appearance of great aesthetic impact, if prepared properly.

How is the barriquito prepared?

To prepare a barriquito you will need :

  • 1 cup of coffee
  • 1 tablespoon of condensed milk
  • Licor 43 or Tía María
  • Foamed milk
  • Grated lemon peel
  • Cinnamon powder


In a properly made zaperoco, 5 well-defined layers must be distinguished. To achieve the desired end result, in terms of appearance, you will need to dose the ingredients in the following order:
Place the condensed milk in the bottom of the glass
Add the liqueur slowly
Pour in the coffee gently and complete with the last layer of foamed milk.
Give the final touch with lemon zest and a generous sprinkling of cinnamon.

Why Licor 43 or Tia maria? These are two liqueurs with a special taste that goes well with coffee, condensed milk and cinnamon.
The former is a liqueur produced in Cartagena and is characterised by its fruity taste and spicy aroma with hints of vanilla. The second, on the other hand, is produced in Jamaica with an (obviously secret) recipe based on rum, coffee and a mix of spices and herbs with a pleasant vanilla aftertaste.
